Parramatta Eels - The end of a 36 year drought?

Parramatta Eels - The end of a 36 year drought?

It's been a year of highs & lows for the Parramatta faithful. With a season highlighted by dominant wins over Penrith/Melbourne & marred by embarrassing losses to the Bulldogs/Tigers, I'd mostly describe it as... Strange.

However, as much as people like to criticise the Eels, it can't be denied that they've earned a hard-fought top 4 spot. Facing a daunting week one matchup with the Panthers, let's take a look at how the Eels stack up, and whether that 36 year Premiership drought will be ending.

3 Key Strengths

2. Firepower through the Middle: The Eels were a statistical juggernaut through the forwards in 2022, with Paulo, Matterson, Papali'i, Lane & co throwing the team to a number one ranking in offloads (332). The second phase play perfectly compliments Parramatta's power running game, where the side ranked 1st in the league in post-contact metres (15,063m).

Historically, sides like the Sea Eagles & Rabbitohs have troubled Parramatta with wide, sweeping plays. However, facing a finals series that appears full of sides who want to get into the grind (Panthers, Cowboys, Sharks, Storm) - a forwards first approach should match up well for the Eels.

3. Creativity across the board: It could be argued that Parramatta are running the form halves pairing of the competition. Dylan Brown's running game has been nothing short of transcendent, and he's clearly found another gear as a playmaker & kicker. In the 7 jersey, Mitchell Moses again leads the NRL in try assists (22).

Where Moses tears sides apart with his kicking game & pin-point passes, it has to be said that Parramatta's left edge has a much more direct approach. I would've laughed in your face if you'd told me 6 months ago that Shaun Lane would be playing like the best edge back-rower in the game, but here we are! His power running & smooth hands, feeding into a Maika Sivo edge have been near unstoppable down the stretch.
