Tongan Squad 2022 - 3 strengths, 1 weakness & our prediction

As a rugby league fan, it's amazing to see players like Haumole Olakau'atu & Daniel Tupou choosing to represent Tonga over all else. International rugby league historically hasn't had the punch of codes like rugby union & football, but with the strength of these rosters, it looks as though times are changing.

Tonga Squad

  1. Tolotau Koula (Sea Eagles)
  2. Daniel Tupou (Roosters)
  3. Siosifa Talakai (Sharks)
  4. Mosese Suli (Dragons)
  5. Sione Katoa (Sharks)
  6. Kotoni Staggs (Broncos)
  7. Talatau Amone (Dragons)
  8. Siosiua Taukieaho (Roosters)
  9. Siliva Havili (Rabbitohs)
  10. Addin Fonua-Blake (Warriors)
  11. Sitili Tupouniua (Roosters)
  12. Keaon Koloamatangi (Rabbitohs)
  13. Jason Taumalolo (Cowboys)
  14. Soni Luke (Panthers)
  15. Haumole Olakau’atu (Sea Eagles)
  16. Tevita Pangai jnr (Bulldogs)
  17. Tevita Tatola (Rabbitohs)
  18. Moeaki Fotuaika (Titans)
  19. Will Penisini (Eels)
  20. Isaiya Katoa (Panthers)
  21. Andrew Fifita (Sharks)
  22. Joe Ofahengaue (Wests Tigers)
  23. Starford To’a (Wests Tigers)
  24. Christian Tuipulotu (Sea Eagles)
  25. Eliesa Katoa (Warriors)

3 Key Strengths

2. Firepower through the Middle: Perhaps the most impressive component of this roster is the quality Tonga will run with at prop & lock. Jason Taumalolo, Addin Fonua-Blake, Tevita Pangai Jr, Siosiua Taukieaho & Moeaki Fotuaika could be the best middle-forward rotation of any national roster in 2022. The Tongan play-makers should be receiving the ball on the front foot, either through a quick ruck, or creative offloads.

3. Scorers, scorers & more scorers: Having made careers for themselves on the wings of high powered offenses, Sione Katoa & Daniel Tupou are two of the better finishers in the NRL. But beyond the wings, where Tonga really pose a sneaky, scoring threat is via their long, rangy, edge back rowers. Olakau'atu, Koloamatangi & Tupouniua all have the awareness to hit holes & speed/power to burst through.

Weakness

  1. Joey Manu (Roosters)
  2. Ronaldo Mulitalo (Sharks)
  3. Peta Hiku (Cowboys)
  4. Jordan Rapana (Raiders)
  5. Ken Maumalo (Wests Tigers)
  6. Dylan Brown (Eels)
  7. Jahrome Hughes (Storm)
  8. Jesse Bromwich (Storm)
  9. Brandon Smith (Storm)
  10. James Fisher-Harris (Panthers)
  11. Isaiah Papali’i (Eels)
  12. Briton Nikora (Sharks)
  13. Joseph Tapine (Raiders)
  14. Kieran Foran (Sea Eagles)
  15. Nelson Asofa-Solomona (Storm)
  16. Marata Niukore (Eels)
  17. Moses Leota (Panthers)
  18. Kenneath Bromwich (Storm)
  19. Erin Clark (Titans)
  20. Isaac Liu (Titans)
  21. Griffin Neame (Cowboys)
  22. Jordan Riki (Broncos)
  23. Scott Sorensen (Panthers)
  24. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (Warriors)
  25. Te Maire Martin (Broncos)

How they'll stack up

If you were to combine these two rosters, you'd likely have the perfect rugby league side. Where Tonga lack class in the spine, New Zealand are turning up with in-form superstars from winning sides. It could be argued on form that Dylan Brown is currently the best number 6 in the NRL, only likely usurped by Cameron Munster's incredible State of Origin performance. Brandon Smith has been there & done that, Jahrome Hughes brings a tonne of experience & Joey Manu should be the single most dynamic player on the field.

Where Tonga have a big advantage is on the edges. If Tonga can keep things simple & feed their bulldozing centres early ball, then Hiku & Rapana could find themselves completely outmatched early in the contest. Where New Zealand likely regain some ground is with the defensive prowess of both Jahrome Hughes & Dylan Brown, being two of the better, more athletic defenders at their position in the league.
